Bella's first day of school!

She did it! She BOUNCED out of the house today, so excited to be like the "big kids" around here. She marched right in to her classroom with us, took her seat on the floor with her classmates, and said "good morning" when Mrs. North called her name. She gave us HUGE, tight hugs when it was time for us to go, but then went back to her seat, smiling all the way. I was so proud.

When I picked her up (after checking on her several times to make sure all was okay, and it WAS), Mrs. North could not get over how well Bella did... responded to all the directions and completed all the work without any help. Glory be.

She can't wait to go back tomorrow! We are enjoying our afternoons together while the boys sleep. I am just so struck with how this is the first day of a lifetime of formal education for her that perhaps would've been out of her reach... and now, the sky's the limit. It is THRILLING to watch her bloom.

Bella's going to school!

A little tradition in our family is to make a cake/cupcakes for the child heading off to their first day of school... had to fight back the tears this afternoon as Bella and I made her batch. She starts tomorrow, and is BEYOND excited.

Still picking dead lice nits out of her hair (I hope they're dead -- they HAVE to be after 5 treatments and millions of hours of picking nits, as well as CONSTANT laundry -- still doing 8 loads today!!!). This lice nightmare needs to get behind us. I have HAD it.

So excited for my little girl to go tomorrow -- the administration is SO excited about her, and her teacher was teary today when I brought her in to show her the classroom and drop off our supplies. Goodness, this is such a bright spot in an otherwise dark month around here.

Last of North Dakota...

More of North Dakota...

North Dakota...

More of July 4th...

July 4th!

Back from the north...

Hey! July 4th marked the 8th time Brant has drawn caricatures for our huge festival in Highlands Ranch. While he drew the crowds, the kids and my parents and I trolled the rides and booths for fun. Booker got a cool "flames" tattoo and Brooklyn and Bella rode ponies after munching on some cotton candy. The train was the biggest hit -- I think they rode it 5 times! Fire works with the neighbors in our cul-de-sac were awesome to watch through the eyes of our newest kiddos -- they loved it! And then we bundled up in the back yard for the big Highlands Ranch spectacular, the day completed with the Booker tradition of homemade oreo ice cream.

The Schelhaas Seven made their first-ever road trip to North Dakota to visit all of Brant's family. We were shocked with how well the children did on the long ride... over 13 hours... 3 movies, millions of books, art projects, and road games later, we arrived in Bismarck (after one tiny little "Mom and Dad almost ran out of gas but someone in a small town gave us their gas" episode). We enjoyed a week of family time, with special highlights at Brant's parents' lake cabin. Booker loved tubing with his cousin, Dawson, and our brave Bella even gave it a whirl with her daddy. Brock caught his first fish, and Bode had fun throwing rocks. Brooklyn loved playing with her cousin, Brynn, and the American Girl Dolls were a hit -- we even took all the girls to the new movie! Brant and I enjoyed hanging out with his parents and two sisters and their families, as well as some extended relatives. Our ride home was another 13 hours, and surprisingly, it went well. I think the younger kids watch the older kids for behavior cues -- and when they do well, we ALL do well! Smile.

Unfortunately, a day after we arrived home, we discovered that Brooklyn's head was FULL of lice!!!! YUCK! And Bella had them, too, but not nearly as badly as Brooklyn... I spent over 8 hours combing nits out of her LONG hair, and I hope to never do that again as long as I live! She had been itching her head for a week, but I just figured she had a heat rash or something. Oops -- won't make that mistake again! We medicated the whole family to be safe, and 7 bottles of Nix and 14 loads of laundry later, I think it's safe to say we're a lice-free family. I got them, too... it is AWFUL!!!! No idea where we picked them up... could've been anywhere.

Am simmering a giant pot of homemade minestrone at the moment, and the little boys are napping. My older three kids are reading books in their rooms, and I am enjoying my first quiet moment in a while. Smile. How I love this family God has given me. The blessings practically choke me with gratitude. I'm tearing up just thinking about it, actually.

Kiddos start school in 2 weeks. Bella is devouring all the kindergarten books and flash cards we picked up for her... and Brooklyn, of course, loves playing the role of teacher. She's actually quite good at it, bless her heart. I've enjoyed watching my girls spend hours at the kitchen table working together... the "sister dynamic" is new for me, and I love watching them interact.

Booker is really growing up. He stays up late with us every night talking and laughing and discussing... I will remember these meaningful nights when my kids are grown and gone, for sure. Truly, you have to marvel at each day, as you just don't know what tomorrow will bring. That's a sermon to myself... but hopefully a good reminder to all of us. I'm bringing a meal to one of Booker's classmates tomorrow night -- his mother, who is my age, has breast cancer -- and it doesn't look good. We've been given today, and perhaps today only -- and its marrow we must suckle and savor...

My house is a mess and, strangely, always smells like a poopy diaper, Brock refuses to be potty-trained, there are dishes to be washed, and I will have a bad hair WEEK due to the nasty shampoo we have to use, but I celebrate the mess, GLADLY. Joy has a way of coating even the craziest of circumstances... and I thank God for that. Karen

More of summer, summer, summer!

Summer, summer, summer!

Phew. After a harrowing 4 weeks of end-of-year school activities, we are FINALLY slowing down around here. Booker is home from a great week at camp, and we've settled in to the summer routine of a whole lot of nothing. As a family, we're ready for some lazy days. Popsicles, mud "soups", catching bugs, chalk art on the driveway, bike rides, painting in the garage (and their brilliant Jackson Pollack idea did NOT thrill me -- smile -- clean up took over an hour and 3 outfits are completely ruined!), trying out new recipes, going to the pool and zoo, and making ice cream... all good things that feel very "family-ish". Love that. We leave for a week in ND on Saturday, and are looking forward to introducing our newest family members to the remainder of Brant's relatives. A 12-hour road trip... wonder how that's going to go??!!

Bella is on FIRE. The girl is spouting a ton of vocabulary these days, and our pediatrician, upon examining her at her 5-year well-check, said "I'm completely blown away by her". She is something else, that girl. She's moved from vocabulary to singing songs, asking for things in phrases, and communicating nearly everything in one way or another. I'm amazed, honestly. We took the kids to Sunday School at church for the first time, and neither child cried or even got upset -- they were happy to see us after the hour was up, but nothing over the top. Just felt "normal" -- I was so nervous the whole time, but there was no need to fret, obviously! Bella has 2 loose teeth, and her first dental appointment went really well. Our dentist was shocked at the condition of both children's teeth -- especially considering their previous situation. All evidence to me of God's protective hand over their lives...

Bella will enter kindergarten in July at our local school! Even though her Ethiopian birth certificate says she's 4 1/2, she's at least 5 1/2 based upon several examinations by professionals. After my first request was rejected, I decided to gather up letters from the powers-that-be to explain her unique situation and that of most children coming out of Ethiopia with fake birthdays that make them younger than they actually are (so as to be more "adoptable" -- whatever to that!). Our school district considered our request and granted her entrance in to school! This is a first for our district, and so we feel like Bella has paved the way for other Ethiopian children in Colorado to align their education with their development. Yea for progress!

She just got her hair re-done -- don't even ASK me how much money we've spent getting her hair braided in the past month -- OH MY!!!! This is another other ball game, this hair... and I'm still learning the "rules!" She loves the latest 'do, thankfully. We've struck out at least once, so hopefully we're on the right road!

Bode, Bode, Bode. Dang, he's cute. I can hardly stand it. His 2-year well-check went equally well, and he's also spouting vocabulary left and right. It's completely infused with his fabulous accent, though, and I'm secretly hoping he holds on to that for as long as he can. It's darling. He sat perfectly still for his first-ever dental appointment, and once again, we were given good news.

July 5th marks the 8th anniversary of Bryant's short life, and this year my heart is surging with thankfulness over what his life opened in our hearts... the door to Bella and Bode joining our family. You just can't imagine my excitement over meeting him in heaven some day to talk about his legacy... we will have a long, long talk, and we will rejoice TOGETHER. I am thankful that God sent him to open our hearts to adoption. It is clear to me now why he came -- and sometimes you never get clarity like that. I am deeply thankful.

Our other three are busy with baseball, and a whole lot of nothing. It's wonderful, these lazy summer days... we'll post more in a couple of weeks to document our trip to ND -- our first family road trip -- eeks!!!! Karen... for all 7 of us
